![]() Is there any icon of the American past more beloved and at the same time reviled than the star-studded diagonal blue cross against a red background?… Mr. Coski calls that very familiar symbol of the Old South ‘America’s most embattled emblem’ and he is no doubt right. “In his richly detailed book The Confederate Battle Flag, John M. ” -Theo Lippman, Jr., The Savannah Morning News “Whether you love or hate the flag, after reading Coski you will love it or hate it in a different way. Coski’s meticulously researched book boils down to a simple truth: the Confederate flag means different things to different people. Coski’s book is ultimately worth reading. Coski chronicles the rich history of the so-called second American flag… along a plethora of surprising stories, anecdotes, economic statistics, and editorial quotations regarding the flag. ” -Joseph Crespino, The Washington Post Book World He shows that the history of the flag is simply too complicated for anybody to reach such simplistic conclusions… The depth and breadth of his research give his book real authority, and future disputants on both sides will have to reckon with his clear, reliable conclusions. Coski takes the story forward from there, but his most important contribution is his recounting of the tumultuous story of the flag in the second half of the 20th century, when the civil rights movement emerged, setting loose a variety of groups that made competing claims over the meaning of the flag-and the meaning of the war… Coski’s book will speak to the flag’s opponents as well as its defenders, but his most inspired message is aimed at those cheerleaders who insist that the flag has one, unchanging, fundamentally benign meaning. The battle flag, though not the official banner of the Confederacy, emerged over the course of the war as the sentimental favorite among Confederate soldiers and civilians alike. In his important new book, The Confederate Battle Flag, John M. “No symbol in the past few decades has been more divisive than the Confederate battle flag. But if you have Coski’s book under your arm, you might be able to turn the debate into something more than just finger-pointing. Bring up the subject of the flag and then stand back. “If you’d like to dazzle your friends at the next cookout with what you know about the much-misunderstood Confederate flag, Coski’s book is for you… Go ahead. ” -Diane McWhorter, The New York Times Book Review Coski’s history, The Confederate Battle Flag, brings some needed rationality to a debate driven by the raw emotion of soul injury. ![]() ![]() Strictly 'super leaker' who ruins the competition for millions by revealing Sunday's result says he's 'providing a service' #Cow porthole codeL214 takes its name from an article in the French rural code which in 1976 recognised for the first time that animals are sentient beings. Thirteen families participated and brain recordings were obtained from five patients when they were unresponsive. The research required patients to give their consent in advance. Romayne Gallagher, a palliative care physician at St. The UBC researchers applied a similar paradigm to actively dying unresponsive patients.īlundon and Ward collaborated with Dr. This study was adapted from a European study that explored brain responses to sound in individual healthy participants, and in minimally conscious and unresponsive brain-injured patients. "We had to look very carefully at the individual control participants' data, to see if each one of them showed a particular type of brain response before we felt confident that the unresponsive patient's brain reacted similarly." "We were able to identify specific cognitive processes from the neuro-typical participants as well as the hospice patients," says Lawrence Ward, a professor in the department of psychology at UBC. The researchers monitored the brain's response to those tones using EEG and found that some dying patients responded similarly to the young, healthy controls - even when they were hours away from death. When the rare tone pattern occurred, both groups responded by giving a pre-arranged signal. The researchers introduced study participants to various patterns of common and rare sounds that changed frequency. This new insight into the dying brain's response to sound can help family and friends bring comfort to a person in their final moments. "Our data shows that a dying brain can respond to sound, even in an unconscious state, up to the last hours of life." "In the last hours before an expected natural death, many people enter a period of unresponsiveness," says study lead author Elizabeth Blundon, who was a PhD student in the department of psychology at the time of the study. But, it seems, the artist does not set such a goal. The canvas "Beautiful magical flowers" is undoubtedly painted in the best traditions of impressionism, of which Afremov was the modern representative. The painting is painted in one warm red-yellow color scheme, which allows you to achieve a truly sunny message of life. A single flower no longer has a single color, but as it bears a reflection and half-tones of flowers standing nearby in the same vase. The artist manages to create a sense of multi-color and integrity of the world. It looks like a kind of aura of a bouquet that gives joy and a sense of beauty. What is it? This is rarely seen in still lives. The artist is not limited only to color, he also focuses on the shape of the bouquet: some flowers are bent, others are standing upright, firmly, as if penetrating surrounding reality with their stems and creating a lighter space around the bouquet as a whole. In his painting, there are the main signs of impressionism: air and light. Only in floral still lives alone can one illustrate the revolution that modernists in art made - from smooth and romantic manner to unsteady and passionate.Īfremov, as an impressionist, naturally addresses the theme of magic flower and creates a painting with his inherent skill, using his innovative, unique technique. Tellingly, of the 28 finalist films, just three had female protagonists, a shocking number given half our population is female. The reason AACTA gave for the inclusion of the four second tranche films was "strong industry demand".īut why those films and not the others? Our members' content had been successful at the box office - they had strong audience and critical reception, and had earned international distribution their quality was undeniable. That's only about seven per cent - which is well below the already-low proportion (16 per cent) of films with female directors. Ten days later, for the first time, AACTA released a second round of films to the Screening Tour, bringing the total number of films directed by women just two out of 28. And yet other films, which arguably did not fulfil all the criteria, were included. The filmmakers thought they would be recognised for their significant contribution to Australian cinema, but when the AACTA nominations were announced, both films were excluded. Two films made by WIFT members, Crushed and All About E, directed by Megan Riakos and Louise Wadley respectively, were released independently in a cinema on demand model, and were wildly successful.Ĭrushed had over forty national screenings and All About E had over thirty, both securing international distribution following their domestic release.ĭespite this, they didn't immediately qualify for AACTA, but satisfied all other criteria. This means women have to release their content independently or through hybrid VOD and cinema on demand models. This is an issue for female directors because it is often difficult for women to secure traditional distribution.ĭespite evidence to the contrary, women are deemed - by mostly male decision makers - as riskier bets at the box office, which results in women filmmakers receiving 63 per cent less distribution than men. The work of women in the Australian film industry has consistently been dismissed with comments like: "Maybe your film just isn't any good" or "The best ideas are the ones that get rewarded."īut rather than blame women for this failure, it's also important to look at the structure of AACTA and its award judging.ĪACTA requires films to be submitted if they don't immediately pass selection criteria, the main clause being a traditional theatrical release of a minimum of 14 consecutive days. Of course, it's easy to jump to meritocracy arguments when issues of systemic bias crop up, as if we are taking the easy road by looking at the reasons that bias exists. This imbalance is most evident in traditional film, where women account for just 32 per cent of producers, 23 per cent of writers and 16 per cent of directors.Īnd, as recent research has shown, men are not only less likely to invest in films about women protagonists, they also tend to hire other men - perpetuating the cycle of women's exclusion from the industry. Sadly, this is not surprisingĭespite the success of numerous excellent programs to boost the number of women in the film industry over the years (film schools today produce roughly equal numbers of male and female graduates), the key decision makers in the film industry - who approve film funding and hire creative teams - are still overwhelmingly male. Of the 28 narrative feature films pre-selected for AACTAs Screening Tour, just two were directed by women. My peers and I at Women in Film and Television (WIFT) are fed up with the Sausage Party, and believe the AACTA Awards should be more representative of our diverse screen culture. ![]() ![]() And so we donned our snag suits to reflect the language that men often use to describe a party without enough chicks. I wanted to make a loud but jovial statement to highlight the glaring gender inequity of this year's festival. Since receiving my invitation to the 6th Annual AACTA Awards - ostensibly held in celebration of Australia's highest achievements in film and television - I had been thinking about pulling some kind of stunt. Despite the success of numerous programs to boost the number of women in the film industry, the key decision makers - and award winners - are still overwhelmingly male.Įarlier this year, as we sat in my kitchen, sifting through the dismal number of female nominations at this year's AACTA Awards, my dear friend and filmmaker Megan Riakos turned to me and said, "You know, it really is a sausage party, isn't it?" ![]() |
